Doctor Mathias Kohl is a counselor working on Talos I during Prey.

History

Background

Prior to his employment by TranStar, Mathias Kohl received a Masters Degree in Counseling from Mikeal-Launders University. He came aboard Talos I to serve as the chief counselor on the station. By 2032, the detrimental psychological effects of long term residence in space were well-documented, and Dr. Kohl was tasked with looking after the mental wellbeing of the employees onboard Talos I. In addition to overseeing the mandatory Psychological Evaluation sessions all employees were required to attend, he arranged for Bianca Goodwin to record a public address announcement encouraging anyone experiencing symptoms like disturbed sleep, chronic stress, or anxiety to visit him at his office in the Trauma Center.

Unfortunately, Kohl seems to have been ill-chosen for the task. Condescending, provocative, and arrogant, Kohl had a habit of making enemies rather than putting his charges' minds at ease. His patients included people like Lorenzo Calvino, Sarah Elazar and Danielle Sho; all of whom left his sessions agitated. When Sylvain Bellamy inquired if members of his team in the Neuromod Division were suffering from anxiety issues, Kohl made a show of maintaining doctor/patient confidentiality only to immediately start gossiping about the large number of employees from both Psychotronics dealing with the same symptoms. He also proved to be ineffective at helping Josh Dalton manage his conflict with Lane Carpenter.

Ultimately though, Kohl had the attention of Alex and Morgan Yu as he would pass on sensitive information regarding the condition of their employees. He reported the increasing anxiety cases in the Psychotronics and the Neuromod Division to Alex. In one of his emails, Kohl shows concern towards Calvino's mental instability and agitated behavior during their sessions and decides to bring this to Alex. He was also responsible for creating the behavior test used in the Simulation Lab. He appears to have been tortured by Chief Surgeon Hendrik DeVries on Alex's orders for the whereabouts of Morgan's recorded sessions.

Prey

Morgan Yu can visit his office in the Trauma Center. It appears April McGuire was present for a session when she was killed during the Typhon outbreak. Morgan finds Kohl's corpse inside DeVries's suite in Crew Quarters. His disfigured face suggests that a Mimic killed him while he was still being interrogated, although DeVries escaped. Kohl carries 4 Medkits.
